Overview

The Department of Justice's overall FY2027 budget request rises 13% to $40.8 billion, but within that total, several specific programs would be eliminated entirely. The largest cut removes $1.7 billion in state and local law enforcement grants, including funding that supports police departments, community policing, and domestic violence programs in all 50 states. Two smaller offices, the Community Relations Service and the Access to Justice program, would each lose their full $10 million, ending federal support for easing community-police tensions and helping low-income people navigate the legal system. Together, these cuts would shift more financial responsibility onto state and local governments and reduce federal support for vulnerable communities and legal aid recipients.
